QUAD A Basketball Realignment Brings New Teams into Section 3

With the departure of New Castle Boys and Girls from AAAA to AAA, the WPIAL realignment brought changes to Section 3 basketball.

Central Catholic boys will join the northern tier, and the Moon girls will be aligned with North Hills and other northern teams.

North Hills Girls Basketball Volunteers for Special Olympics

The 2007/2008 Lady Indians basketball team volunteered and worked the Special Olympics basketball tournament at Pitt’s Fitzgerald Fieldhouse in April.

North Hills Participates in National Sportsmanship Day

North Hills High School, one of eight schools in the country to be named an All-American Sportsmanship School for 2006, will once again participate in National Sportsmanship Day. The date of the event was Tuesday, March 4th, 2008. 

More than 14,000 schools at the national & international level, will promote the concept of  "Dare to Play Fair."

A newly created alumni section on the sports website highlights accomplishments of former North Hills Alumni. Please e-mail a biography to cardoned@nhsd.net, and we will post those acheivements under the sports alumni section.

North Hills Athletes Achieve on the Field and In the Classroom

The Fall Varsity Sports Teams had an outstanding 3.36 Grade Point Average. This included the sports of Girls Tennis, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Football, Girls Volleyball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Golf, and Cheerleading.

The Winter Varsity Sports Teams had high marks both in interscholastic athletic competition and in academics. Collectively they had a grade point average of 3.18. This included the sports of Girls and Boys Basketball, Swimming and Diving, Ice Hockey, Cheerleading, Bowling, and Wrestling.

The Spring Varsity Sports Teams have an overall grade point average of 3.25. The teams included were Baseball, Lacrosse, Softball, Tennis, Track, and Boys Volleyball. Additionally, 24 student athletes had a 4.0 or higher during the 3rd marking period. 

 Changes to Sports Physical Offerings for 2008-2009

Northern Area Family Medicine will only offer one opportunity in the summer to get a physical. Parents can take their child if they intend to play a fall, winter, or spring physical. There is a cost associated with the physical.

Following forms (which can be downloaded) must be completed and turned in prior to participation or tryout:

  • Comprehensive PIAA Physical Form or Recertification Form
  •  Waiver and Release Form

Physicals are good for up to one year, and can be obtained anytime after June 1, 2008 regardless of the sports season they intend to participate in.

Start Dates for 2008-2009 Sports

  • Fall: Monday, August 11, 2008
  • Winter: Monday, November 17th, 2008
  • Spring: Monday, March 2, 2009 

 If parents do not take advantage of the offering at Northern Area, they need to go to their own physician to have the physical administered.

Northern Area Family Medicine One Time Summer Offering

Saturday, July 19th, 2008 (for fall/winter/spring participants)

Cost: $30.00

A recertification is need for each sports season an athlete participates in after the fall.

Varsity Fall sports have a start date of Monday, August 11, 2008.

Junior High Start Dates Vary According to the Sport

  • Junior High Soccer: August 25th
  • Junior High Football August 14th
  • Junior High Girls Basketball August 25th
  • Junior High Cross Country August 11th

To participate in fall interscholastic athletics, a comprehensive physical is required by Monday, August 11, the first day of the Spring Sports Season. 

A physical can be obtained anytime after June 1, 2008. The proper forms must be completed.
